Don’t go crazy in the stream of people

Two facts: good and bad. Working with the stream of people leads to burnout. Everyone who has ever worked in a call-center or behind the counter knows it. This is a “bad ” fact.

“Good” fact: you can cope with it. In addition to the standard recommendations about rest, delegation and healthy habits (we wrote about them here and here), there are a few more things for such cases.

Divide and say hello

You must agree, no one is always friendly, sweet and open. A living person has different emotions and reactions and it’s impossible for him to be static. But it is possible to wear masks and adapt to people.
Look: Jung believed that we interact with other people that part of our psyche, which he called a Person (from ancient Greek – “mask”).
The person helps us to present ourselves in society, show our strengths and hide our weaknesses. And the Person serves as a protective layer that covers our “I” from strong influences and shocks. It covers up our weakness. A person can have many sides: depending on the situation, we show ourselves in different ways.

This does not mean that our Person is something false, invented and insincere. It’s just a part of us, not whole out identity. When you work with people, it is very important to interact with them through the Person. It is important to share internal dispositions: now I’m talking to the client as Valeria, a complex and colorful person, or a girl from the role of the call-center operator, which helps not to take any causticity and rudeness personally. You don’t take it personally but the Person, who works as a phone surveyor, does.

You can create any person for different situations and roles. It’s a sort of emotional flak jacket. You can create a role of the call center operator and call it “Milena”, for example.” Milena” is a kind-hearted person, loves to communicate and sometimes plays dumb. She will listen to any claim, ignore rudeness and be able to continue communication with a smile in voice. “Milena” gets words and expressions for every occasion under the belt. Like a robot she hears the phrase and begins to look for the appropriate answer in the database. She answers a claim like: “I’m sorry, we’ll see what can do for you.”She is told that their firm is terrible, she: “I understand that you are disappointed, let us give you a free repair”. And so on.

Clichés make our life easier and save energy

You are not “Milena”, but “Milena” is part of you. You can literally imagine how you “put on” this role and interact with customers through it. Important! Don’t forget to take off the “mask” to keep the contact with yourself.

Time and place to live

This Person trick is very useful for people who work with a great number of people. If you are a teacher or a psychologist, “Milena” is not enough: your work requires more openness and deep human contact. It affects not only the Person, but also your internal self. Even “Milena” has difficult situations that make nervous. But this situation spurs on to some actions: beat, run, freeze. At work, it is rarely possible to react to stressful situation at once.

Usually you have to suppress emotions and actions and demonstrate cultural behavior. Although you would like to use a vulgarity (beat), just go and interrupt an unpleasant contact (run) or hide in a corner and be silent (freeze). Suppress emotions slowly accumulate in unconscious and wait for a moment to come out. It is important to allocate a special time and place to display of emotions. It is good when you have time to calm, to think through situation before responding. Think of exercises to relieve stress. You can lock yourself in the toilet and swear or scream. You can jog, stomp your feet and connect the whole body. You can read more about the way of handling stress here.
